The Challenge: Too Rigid, Too Basic, or Too Late

As one of the world’s most recognized technology brands, Atlassian’s events team needed more than just another off-the-shelf event app—they needed a partner that understood the fast-moving, high-impact nature of their portfolio while maintaining the ability to self edit on the fly when needed.

In 2023, the team found themselves limited by the event apps available on the market. While some met their needs by supporting enterprise events, they lacked flexibility and the ability for the team to independently manage their events without having to rely on the app provider.  Other options were lightweight, generic apps that didn’t offer extensive branding and customization capabilities that would reflect Atlassian’s strong brand presence and visual identity.

With the lack of suitable options on the market, the team explored taking a PWA (Progressive Web App) route by building their own hybrid experience through custom development. While it solved some surface-level problems, the trade-offs quickly became clear. Branding limitations persisted, development hours and costs piled up, and most importantly, users still missed the experience of having a true, native app.

“We’d look at our pros and cons list and say, ‘Okay, this checks a lot of boxes… but it’s not Rachel,’” laughed Lauren, referencing the iconic Friends quote. “It wasn’t the right fit—and we knew it.”
